Bowls BUCHAN OF BALMACEWEN

May Partner Lambeth In Pairs At Dominion Tourney FAIRFIELD'S RUN OF SUCCESS (From "N.Z. Truth V ; Special Dunedin Representative") The fifth round of the Saturday' Shield mateheg m Dunedin saw that little inland club, Fairfield, once again obtain a victory, the Leith failing to break its victorious sequence of wins.

is ahead of Kaituna by r * four points at present, with Taieri and Mornington well m the running. The Kaituna boys must have been strictly on the job, as they notched the maximum number of poin,ts against the St. Clair Club, winning every section. Mornington, likewise, scored the possible at the expense of Otago. This latter club ) must have been' surprised to find itself down m all the three sections. Caledonian cleaned up Roslyn rather badly, which m view of the leading posi-, tion ; held m the four rink games by the ■latter, rather shakes confidence m its ability, to stay out the final games against Dunedin, St. Kilda and West Harbor. So far, Taieri has not done too well m the Saturday matches, but this club has a nasty habit qf coming with a great - dash during the last half of the season, and making matters interesting.-

Meet Jimmy I Buchan, of Bal- i macewen, who will i be giving the Do- ! minion tourney the < benefit of his pre- i sence next January. If Jimmy partners i Frank Lambeth i (present Dominion i singles " champion), j m the pairs, it's 1 only a. matter of i the greens being m - proper order for them . to lift the trophy. Jimmy can play bowls, too true! Another very

strong combination, which is reported to be hitching together for the Dominion Pairs, is Jock Best and c Harry Gardiner. Both these gents can trundle the woods with the greatest ex- : pertness, and are bound to give any opponents all they want. ' . Keep an eye on this pair, and if < they get to the post section games, keep ' both eyes. They'll be worth watching. i The four rink players of the Otago i Club are a pretty solid lot, who must be treated with respect m this important >. fixture. They lost m the second round to i

St. Clair, but were unlucky, as the "fifth man - was not running with them. In the next round, they pushed out- ; a good team m Balmacewen, and m the fourth, though it was hardly anticipated by many, the hitherto unbeaten Taieri lot succumbed to the hillsiders after a stern fight. Judging, by the score, Harry Telford's team was the factor m the win, as Otagb was seven up over the whole, and Telford's rink has a plus of ten over Cousins (Taieri). , Roslyn settled the pretensions of An' derson's Bay for a hope m the four"; rinks, as it beat the seasiders m the aggregate by ten points. Anderson's Bay's chance is now pretty hopeless. Roslyn', with its four successive wins, leads for the section, and it looks very likely to be the ultimate winner. Its big hurdle will be the old club, Dunedin, and. the clash takes place next week. West Harbor introduced an innovation by trying several hew skips m the four rinks. And it panned s out fairly- well, even though the club lost the match. The Saturday teams will benefit by this tryout, and it induces better practice for its members. Arthur Barnett s Roslyn team m the' four rink.. games' have- been very success-* ful, and should they keep up this winning form, are bound to lift' the club to a leading position. Veteran Davie Campbell, the hero of a hundred fights, is of material assistance as third to Arthur. Caledonian registered its fourth __ success m the A section of the four . rinks, Mornlngton falling to stop the thistle boys. "Caley" now. heads . this section and looks like retaining . pride of' place, though possibly Caversham may give it a big run. It is certain that Taieri will, make a determined effort to check its career, with a view to tieing for first place ; m the section. ■ . ' ■ A striking illustration of the vagaries of the game is reported m the ValjeyCaversham match. Tonkin (Valley), led Thomson (Caversham), 24 to nil . with, half the game gone, and the other half" saw Thomson keep the mat, though his team lost the final head, showing Valley 26, Caversham 22— a re-: markabe recovery. ...
