LACKED FINISH

o ■ South Otago Lose To Neighbors j. (From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) [, 'THE annual match between . Otago and • \ South Otago at Kaitangata resulted c m an easy victory for Otago. The scores •. m most of the matches did not repre- - sent the . true difference between the V various players, many of the matches being very closely contested. The South Otago players, when they had gained the advantage, lacked the necessary experience to finish off the game. This was very noticeable m the second • men's double, when Scott and Clemens led their opponents, Duthie and Penrose, .5-3 and 40 love m the second set after winning the first set, but were eventually beaten. ; It was a wonderful effort of Penrose and Duthie to pull the match out of an almost hopeless position, and to allow their opponents only one more game while they rattled up the remaining nine for match. Up to five all, the first men's singles between Duthie and .Sumpter was an evenly contested match, but once the Otago man broke through his opponent's service, he had no trouble m gaining the decisio.n. ' • ' While Sumpter's driving was certainly erratic, his volleying was excellent, and he gained many clean ones with this shot. One of the best matches of the day was seen m the combine between Duthie and Miss Partridge and Sumpter and Miss Brookes, the latter pair gaining the decision by the odd game. Sumpter was the outstanding player m the match and continually caught hisopponents out of position with wellplaced drives and volleys. Miss Brookes ably supported her partner, and she revealed fine determination m stemming many of her opponent's smashes. She also resorted to lobbing ,on occasions, and also by retrieving some of Miss Partridge's smashes, she sometimes regained the attacking position. . In their first lady, Mrs. Poynter, South Otago has a player of considerable experience. 4i
