CARTERTON
RECORD Greytown Buckled It On Saturday (From "N.Z. Truth's" Wairarapa Rep.) pARTERTON'S unbeaten record of the past two seasons was terminated last ■Saturday, when the reds met their Waterloo on the Greytown ground. Carterton must be considered unlucky to lose, for, m addition to being without Irvine and Campbell m .their pack, they suffered, the handicap of a stiff breeze that sprang up m the second spell.
■ The red pack was definitely, superior and the backs individually as good as Greytown's, but as a combination only went m fits and starts. .
■ Their repeated failure to score was due more to their own. mistakes than to the strength of Greytown's defence. .
The inconsistent Denby played one of ' his best games, and
went .as . well as any back on the ground, and, with Hart and Nlkorlma, gave Grey r tdwh . most- trouble. Trapp was the better of the Carter ton .wingers, Burgeas spoiling good chances by faulty handling. ■ Jensen played a game out of, the box at full-back. At iialf, Hiroti was a ,bit on the slow side, and the play of- the , Greytown backs; suffered occasionally m consequence. ' : •

"Truth's" opinion is .that, after his display against Old Boys. Greytqwn ought to grve Peter Himona a ■' real , tryout behind the scrum. In that game Himona showed great aptitude for the position, and has only to prove his .ability to lake a gruelling to make a., half-back of class. . . ■•''.'.. Except for an occasional dropped pass. 1 Stringfellow played good football,', his defence showing a big improvement as the result of overcoming his fondness for interceptions. - . . . i Fred. Fuller also did a ;lot of good | work, but his hands likewise are not too sure In the critical stage of a passing rush. Tn Irvine's absence,- Lr. Knowles partnered Reid m the front row, while Churchouse took Campbell's, place at wing-forward. Despite these changes, the red pack lost little " of its effectiveness and had Greytown beaten m almost every department of forward play. ' Fairbrother was the best forward on the ground, with Churchouse, S. Reid, and K. Reid also going' well for Carterton, and Clarke, Barney and Flutey showing up well for the tricolors. '■' Old Boys have fallen from their high estate, and it took them all their time to- last out long enough to win against Red Stars. With the hep of a stiff breeze m the second spell, Stars had any amount of chances, to get the winning points, ■, but luck was against 'them. ' ■'■'"■■ V: Both set 6of backs 'were far from strong In. defence and Ineffective m attack, and the tally of dropped passes would have kept an accountant busy, ; /■ Roach was the best back on the' Winr ning side, but; 1 was below par,, and; was overshadowed by Gorkill,' the Star,'fiveeighths never being at a" loss either m defence or. attack, and showing truly wonderful judgment m his line-kicking.
