HEADLIGHTS
Correct Adjustmept Saves Trouble Headlights on motor vehicles not m accordance with the requirements of the regulations are responsible for a large number of the reports being submitted against motorists. A MOTOR vehicle is required to be equipped with two lighted headlamps, not higher than 4ft 6in. from the' ground, of approximately equal candle power, capable of* showing a white light only to the front and on opposite sides of such vehicle. The rays of light from these lamps are required to be projected on to the ground at a distance not exceeding 60 yards m a direct line m front of the vehicle, and each lamp is required to be of sufficient candle power to illuminate, and render easily distinguishable at a distance of 25 yards any person or substantial object, m front of the .vehicle. ' If the headlamps are correctly adjusted they can be made adaptable for any conditions of night traffic without allowing them to become glaring. There is no necessity for headlights to be dimmed, and the practice of dimming headlight^ is accompanied by considerable danger. On a motor cycle only one front lamp is necessary. Similar conditions apply to this lamp as to the lamps on motor vehicles, with the exception that the lamp on the motor cycle shall also render easily • distinguishable at a distance of 15 . yards each figure of the number ' plate carried on the front of the motor cycle. !. ■ ■ Jt is an offence ■ for any person, to drive upon a public street any motor vehicle with >a lighted lamp nofr constructed or adjusted so as to diffuse efficiently the light of such lamp and. prevent any glare therefrom affecting adversely the- vision' of any person approaching such vehicle. Last year a number of fatalities resulting from, motor vehicle accidents upon public streets were' ti-aceable "to lights which were not m accordance with the requirements of the regu-' lations. A careful compliance with the regulations regarding lights will lessen the risk of accident and be of bene•fit to both motorists and pedestrians.
