GOLDING ON WARPATH
Athletics
(From V "N.Z. Truth's" Special Athletic AVriter) . ■_■ ' } The selection of the team to represent Australia at the Empire Games m Canada 1 has not been) accomplished without a storm. . PRST of all. a~controversy centred round the selection of Cameron, :the exN.Z. swimmer, over the heads of Australians.: The i athletic position is somewhat different but even more interesting. "When theiN.S.W. nominations were announced, Geo. Golding, the State's most brilliant quarter-miler, who -was engaged on a meteoric tour of N.Z., was omitted, and
W. Di Hunt, a good athlete, but one who had suffered defeat by Golding and whose times were inferior, was included. Golding was interviewed by "Truth" and immediately threw his hat into the ring with a challenge to race Hunt over any distance at any time for a place m the team. This caused a stir when it was cabled to Sydney, but lost its sting . when Hunt announced that he had no intention of making the trip and. had retired from the track. This left the big N.S.. Welshman: still on«the warpath, but without a Bcalp to get at. One was provided, however, when the Australian team proper was announced: \ It contained Webb, Bascombe, a Victorian quarter-miler of class and chamlon of Australia. Bascombe defeated Golding m Melbourne during the championships, the latter collapsing thirty yards from the tape. Golding ascribed this failure to the fact that he was a sick man and claims that, fit and well, he can beat the Victorian. Consequently he lost no time m firing m a challenge to Bascomb'e, which to the surprise of many was promptly -accepted. The race will take place this month and is causing a tremendous amount of interest. ■ > ' : -,■•.•'■ Latest reports from Australia show that Golding is retaining the brilliant form that marked his N.Z. running, ' and he must; be a hard man to beat on the day. Bascombe, however, Is no sluggard, and has clocked 48 3-5 sees, against Golding's 48 3-10. The Victorian, moreover, is a very determined runner and a hard finisher. What the selectors think of the race is not known here. :
