Forbury Park On Saturday
BIG EVENT AT DUNEDIN
Both The Shrew and Carmel Are In Form
TRAMPFAST A SOLID OPPONENT
.(By "The Toff)
On her excellent showings at Addington and at Ashburton The Shrew should be a stout favorite for the Prince of Wales Handicap at Dunedin on Saturday week, when the first day of the Porbury Park Trotting Club's meeting will take place.
IN the Halswell Handicap at Addington she finished third off 4.30 m 4.26 3/5, having to come from 60yds. behind and thread her way through a field to do it. Then m the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton sho conceded 36yds. m a 4.33 class and, after being a long way back half a mile from home, she finished like. the good mare that she is to gain second honors. Again she bettered her time, the watch reading 4.27 2/5. , At Forbury she will begin from the front of a 4.30 class, and being an honest and everyday pacer she should command confident support from followers of form. Many will argue that Carmel beat her so easily at Ashburton that he might do it again. It must be remembered that at Ashburton she conceded Carmel 24yds., whereas at Forbury she will meet Carmel on 24yds. .better terms. It is admitted that Carmel is at fit as hands can make him, and that at the stiff end of a fight he will finish on as well as The Shrew. On Easter form Lingfield and Omaha should not threaten danger, and Real Light is muddling off the mark, a habit that is losing him too much ground at the start of his (races. Travis Axworthy is dodging along nicely, but it is questionable whether he will be at the top of his form at Fbrbiiry. R. B. Berry's pair, Sunshower /
i and Jean McElwyn, demand serious recognition. At Addington, Sunshower fiddled at the "start and lost all her position m the first furlong. She is very well,' so is Jean McElwyn, but with an even breakaway Sunshower will beat Jean McElwyn. Off the same mark as Berry's pair is the Auckland ,-.•■ pacer, Native Prince, which won m impressive style at Addington recently. Previously, a non-stayer, Native Prince came with a rattle and won going away, cutting out the two miles m 4.26.1/5 off a 4.30 mark. At Forbury he is set to begin from 4.28 and while he- has a stiff job m front of him to head The Shrew, he will not fail to dispute the issue over the last furlong. ' Next to The Shrew and Carmel the Aucklander, Native Prince, will be mostly inquired for. Of those farther down the list, the demon trotter, Trampfast, may offer most danger. In the earlier part of the season he thrilled the Dunedin public by downing a high-class field m the principal contest at, that meeting. Trampfast is a very hard horse to stave off over the last half-mile of a journey and if the winner hails from the back division Trampfast should gain the honor. But on. form and everything that goes to find winners The Shrew, Carmel and Native Prince stand out above the field..
