DRILLING FOR OIL
AFTER applying the latest scientific methods of oil exploration. Coal, Oil (N.Z.) Ltd. commenced drilling operations at the No. 1 bore site, Omata, New Plymouth, on April 24, and at 10 a.m. on the 29th a depth of 135 feet had been reached. The^plant has a drilling capacity of 8000ft7 Dr. Leon Bossard, the company's chief geologist, is now located at New Plymouth. The drill manager, Mr. D. J. Tynan, is an Australian who has been operating m the U.S.A. and Mexico I as a drilling contractor. Two other expert drillers (Messrs. Hines and Coles) were brought specially from Mexico. Three shifts per day are now being worked. Oil boring has been caried out m New Zealand for several years with varying success, but never m the history of oil search m the Dominion, it is claimed by the directors of this company, have operations approaching the magnitude of those being used by Coal, Oil (N.Z.) Ltd. been attempted. The Minister for Mines will perform the official opening ceremony at Omata on May 8. Senator Millen, chairman of the company, will be present at the ceremony, as also will Mr. A. E. Thomas, manager, who is now m New Zealand making preliminary arrangements.
