OTHER WAY ROUND
GEORGE COOK TELLS HIS • LITTLE STORY First word has come from the Australian heavyweight George . Cook regarding the rumpus he caused when he threw up the job of_ sparring with Jack Sharkey, prior to the Boston bruiser's battle with Englishman Phil Scott. pABL.ES said that Cook quitted be- . cause Sharkey was knocking him about too much, but George indignantly denies this. According to hrm, the boot was on the other foot; he was showing Sh'arkey up so much m work-outs that Jack's manager feared a heavy slump m gate receipts and promptly gave Cook "the air." Cook points out that when he first went to America m 1925 he dropped p. hair-line decision to Sharkey at Boston. Without exception, newspaper critics gave the verdict to Cook, and the Australian reckons it is somewhat significant that Sharkey has consistently shied clear of a return bout. Even now, says George, there!, is a challenge In the air on his behalf, but Sharkey has shown no inclination to do business. George won his last fight hands down, and after his next encounter he intends to set sail for merry England. From there he. hopes to return to Australia, maybe picking up a bunch of Yankee scrappers en route. George's argument sounds feasible enough, but recent form suggests that he has a somewhat exalted opinion of his own prowess. j Five years ago Cook was at his top, I but ever since then he has been steadily slipping. Meantime, Sh.arkey has got nearer and nearer the top, until he is generally recognised as un- • crowned king of the heavies. He belted Young Stribling. and he almost slaughtered Tommy Loughran and Phil Scott. He is a hot favorite to stop Max Schmelling's long run of successes. If he ever got m the same ring with Cook he'd be a 100/1 on bet to stop the Australian veteran inside a couple of rounds.
