SHOULD BE PLENTIFUL
No Shortage of Competitors At Tauherenikau
Till the acceptances are- posted for the Wairarapa meeting, and the intentions of owners and trainers are known, surveying the card for -the first da.y is a real undertaking.
T OOKING at the handicaps, the fact Li is very forcibly borne home that there will have to be something m the nature of a landslide at payment hour to bring the fields down to small dimensions. There will be plenty of runners th« first day, but with hard tracks it may be different on Monday. The Swell's Awapuni running points to him m the Easter Handicap, but at Masterton Stanchion and Grecian went very well, and they, with Spearmiss, which would be improved by her Hastings races, should prove the troublesome ones. Having won three m a row, Mandy must be treated with every respect m the open six. The field is much the same class as she beat at Opaki, but she has a lot more weight this time. In this class Ridgemount is at his best, while Dobbin is as evergreen as the jacket his jockey wears. Mandy, Ridgemount and Dobbin are those which appeal. . • They are a weak lot of hacks m the Ferry Handicap, and now that Sunkissed has started winning she may keep on with the good work. She was never off the bit at Masterton. Ex Dono, Water-spear,, Projection, Patearoa and Acreline appear the best of the others, and it may be that Waterspear and Projection will try Sunkissed' out. Autopay's form at Masterton was not correct, and possibly his Awapuni races temporarily knocked him. If he has freshened up he will take part m the finish of the Nursery, but he is going to meet strong opposition from Arajean and Isa. If Tourist is at the meeting he will give them some hurry up' m the hack mile, while General Gas has that third,
from a long way back, at Masterton to his credit. This race may see the weakest field of the day. I On her winning effort the second day at Awapuni, Belle> Star would have a show m the Martinborough Handicap, though she will be tackling a better class. . Rameses was fourth In the Masterton Cup, and this distance will suit him better, and of the top weights King Midas should do best. It is just possible that' several of those left m the Mokai Handicap will have raced earlier m the. day. Dainty Ways will be fresh, and so will Ben Hur. The former won at Masterton, and Ben Hur, after scoring the first day at Awapuni, was going fairly well when he fell on the turn. They may be best backed when the machine closes.
