ASSAULTED THE S.M.

— ♦ Maori Struck Before He Thought CANINE WAR (From "N.Z. Truth's" Patea Kep.) JVfIR. J. H. SALMON, S.M., of Wanga- "*• nui, is very kindly disposed towards dogs and possesses a big, shaggy canine which may be seen frequently following his master to and from the courthouse. It is not to be wondered at then, that when the magistrate was placidly strolling along the main street m, Patea the other day and saw a dog fight m full swing, with a number of onlookers urging the dogs to further effort, he stepped m and tried to separate the two animals. "TWO GOOD CRACKS" He was a surprised man, however, to find himself suddenly seized by the collar by a Maori and spun round like a top, and almost tossed off his feet. , The magistrate recovered himself quickly, and after giving theMaori two good cracks, by way of taming him, he then exercised his power of arrest. It was a very surprised Maori who found that he had assaulted the magistrate, and incidentally a very contrite one. In the meantime some of the onlookers scuttled off m case they might be called as witnesses, while others assisted to separate the dogs. The Maori, Maui Onokura, was brought before justices the following day and charged with assaulting Mr. Salmon and with urging dogs to (fight m the street. He was fined £5 on each charge.
