FOXTON IS HARD UP

Mayor Urges Mercy For Debtors

FUNDS ARE LOW

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Foxton Rep.) The position of Foxton's finances is causing the guardians of the public funds some concern. At the present time there is outstanding on the Council's bocks the sum of £4103/0/6, an unenviable position ift view of the Government Auditor 'recently commenting on . the fact that £314 was too much to be outstanding m connection with the Greymouth Borough Council's balance sheet. A SPECIAL meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held recently to discuss the position, at which the Town Clerk produced a list of defaulters comprising 190' names, the work of a fortnight lo compile. The Mayor, Mr. Perreau, m opening the meeting expressed the hope that Councillors would mm- ■- gle mercy with justice and not be to.o harsh m whatever steps they considered necessary for the collection of the debts. If they were too drastic it would mean, said the mayor, that a number of old and well -respected Foxton citizens would be forced out of their homes. He suggested that the Town Clerk's statement should be taken m committee, to which the remainder of the Councillors agreed, although Councillor Thompson remarked that some of the. debtors were deserving of all the publicity it would be possible to give them. In some cases the properties on which rates are outstanding will be put up for auction with a view to providing the ready money to meet the Council's demands, while m other cases .judgment will be sought' immediately through the court for recovery of certain sums owing. In a few cases, considered absolutely hppeless, amounts will be written off. • - ■ v
