IS TOO SMALL
Taranaki Track Will Need To Improve Taranaki has to be classed among the race-paths which are N not m favor of the best racing where big fields are concerned. THAT was plainly made evident on Cup day last Aveek. Not only by the smash which took place during the Moturoa Handicap, but also by the fact that horses drawn m No. 1 position for sprint events had much m their favor. In the four short-distance events of Cup day, - three favored with No. 1 position actually won, while the other fell when holding a reasonable chance of success. ' There are some "tricky turns on the track, .altogether against giving all competitors an equal chance of success, while m big fields there wijl always be the risk of accident. The Taranaki stewards are awake to the faults of their track and are anxious to improve matters, so much so that a scheme has already been dealt with to bring: the course up-to-date, j It is all a matter of money which cannot be found at the moment, but until it is and the work completed no definite progress can be hoped for from a racing standpoint. Many of the owners and trainers went away from .last week's fixture with definite conclusions that Taranaki was a track whereon the best horses would need all the luck with them to win. The sportsmanship of the heads m the butter province is of the best, but that does not get away from the fact that only roomy tracks appeal to owners, trainers and punters alike these days. It is hoped that Taranaki's progress m this direction- will come about at the earliest possible moment.
