As resident engineer 1 for the Auckland City Council m 1907, he supervised the spanning of Grafton Gully, and the job was ultimately to open the way for his recent appointment as city engineer. " Seventy-five highly skilled men from all parts of the world sought the position when the previous holder, Mr. W. E. Bush, left for Australia. Nevertheless, Mr. Tyler has caught the councillors' fancy, despite the world-wide and expensive search.
