minds of Aucklanders, but to one, man at least it has proved a steppingstone to greater things And that man is James Tyler. As resident engineer 1 for the Auckland City Council m 1907, he supervised the spanning of Grafton Gully, and the job was ultimately to open the way for his recent appointment as city engineer. " Seventy-five highly skilled men from all parts of the world sought the position when the previous holder, Mr. W. E. Bush, left for Australia. Nevertheless, Mr. Tyler has caught the councillors' fancy, despite the world-wide and expensive search. Auckland born, with a high reputation m, his profession, it is fitting that he should crown abrilliant career. Trained at Auckland Varsity, he "has gained his subsequent ; experience by hard, practical work m this country.
