Suspicious of the conduct of his • wife, who was separated from him, ■ Redvers Mewton endeavored to obtain evidence which might load to his obtaining a divorce from her, but he chose the wrong manner and time to make his investigations, and m addition with not the slightest justification for his actions. LJEl.was brought before Mr. H. P. 11 Lawry, S.M., in the Christchurch Maintenance Court charged with going: on the premises of his wife during the currency of a separation order. The maintenance officer, Mr. P. Jones, said that Mewton lived near his wife, and one evening:, hearing music m her home, became suspicious of her conduct, and went, to s see what he could see. - ;. He went, through the .house, pretending that he was chasing some* one, and then went up to a man and asked him if he were the per-' son he was supposed to be chasing. • ' ' When he went through ' the house the people there became alarmed. He had used bad language, and there were young couples present. Mr. i Jones said that Mewton had twice previously been warned to keep away from his wife. He was under the influence of liquor at the time of his last visit. •. .x ■ 1 There was "no drink, at the house and also no suggestion that the conduct there had been anything but proper. ; . ■ '■"■, ■•_ , ■._ •;: •■ . . . • Mr. W. 5-JTracy, who appeared for Mewton, said that the man now realised that it was an offence to go on to his wife's premises. He was suspicious of her conduct, but had other methods of looking into her behavior. In fining him £2, Mr. Law'ry warned him that if he went near the house again he would, be • sent to gaol.
