Whispers From Wanganui

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) THE form shown by Pedestal at Woodville was not good enough to suggest that the half-brother to Commendation can have any chance m the i Great Northern Derby. He can muster up a good deal of pace for four or five furlongs, but does not stay on. w * • Drastic has not yet done anything of note, and will need to improve a good deal to score a win at Ellerslie. It is unlikely that W. Rayner will go north this Christmas. * * • " Pomp is making a slow but steady improvement from his severe injuries, but it will be a long time before he will be ready to race again. * # * There are hot wanting signs that Star Area will stage a come-back shortly. The Acre gelding has been sprinting well recently, and the racing at Hawera should make him just about cherry ripe for the holiday meetings. * * * Clever has improved since winning at Feilding-, and her connections were very confident she would score another success at Hawera. * ♦ # WhenFernden got out of his box at Feilding he galloped on the hard j roads for a mile or so, and this made him sore. He is still a bit tender on his pins, but was expected to run well at" Hawera. * * • Just An Idea will improve with, a race or two, and a race may come his way during the holidays. *. * # W. Dwyer has Paratoo m good shape, and as the Grandcourt colt will sharpen up with a race or two, he Should be worth watching- during- the holidays. I • . •■ • * '" Avro has been running- good races without any luck lately. His turn should come shortly,, as F. Tilley has him m great fettle. # * * Whenuatonga suffered from a very severe cold early m the season, and this robbed him of a chance of winning a race or two. He is all right now and will be seen out at- Marton. • * * . ♦ Equitant showed pace at Marton m the spring, but failed to stay on. She looks more solid now, and consequently should be hard to beat m the Trial at Marton. • ♦ # Arisus is hitting out nicsfcy and the son of Thespian is likely to keep the best of them busy m the juvenile events at Marton. # * # The Fordell stable has three horses engaged m the Marton Cvp — Cashier, Thrift and Avro. * * * F. Tilley will have a big team for the Awapuni and Marton meetings, including Cashier, Glenartriey, Avro, High Falutin', Consent, Ruanui, Cadland, Thrift and Platina. * # * Brigadier Bill was a bit on the. big side at' Feilding, He has come on nicely since and should provide James Bull with a Christmas box. « * • Fernden is engaged m the open sprint events at the Marton meeting, and, if started, will beat more than beat him. * * # Freehold was sprinting m fine style before going south to the Wellington and New Zealand Cup meetings, but went right off on the trip and did no good. If he strips well during the holidays he is almost sure to win some money, as there is no doubt he can gallop. - * # # Glenavtney was expected to prove one of the best of the season's three-year-olds, but his early spring form was disappointing. He won each day at Woodville and appears certain to score again during the holidays.

Manly is hitting out boldly and will keep the best of them moving. * # • Singer has also been going well, and will be very. hard over seven furlongs. *# ' * The absence of Manly, Gold Dawn and Singer from the Taranaki nomi•ations came as a surprise.- It is understood that difficulty In securing the track m the afternoon caused Trainer Mandle to give preference to Manawatu. * # • Ridgemount is very (well just now, and will soon reward R; Johnson. * * • Bonogne and The Swell, m the same stable, are also doing everything that is asked. # # ■ •■■ Horomea is going remarkably well just now, and showing no signs of soreness. Unfortunately Trainer P. Johnson has ricked his knee Tiadly, and may not 'be able to accompany the team to Hawera. * • • Peg Black has improved out of knowledge of late. ' •* » • Quilflre is galloping very well and showing all his old pace m sprinting. A safe jumper, he should be handy at New Plymouth. * * * Whenttanui is galloping 1 m great style but will he reproduce it? The Stratford pair, Seatown and Yoma, have been doing very good work. They" will play their part at Hawera. * • .# Silvermine has been given solid work and may be tried out over middle distances before long. ♦ ♦ • Llanore is well and finishes with great dash. . •.* • • Hipo has not been showing his best on the tracks of late, but he always runs an honest race. # * # ' Mint Leaf is coming on, but may require a couple of races. • . # # * Bell Star, R. Johnson's latest recruit, pleases local observers. • * * Ross Perry is very speedy m his sprints, and appears to stay on, too. • # ■ # Latakia is going well, and when the Nolan Cup is decided will not be far away. #*. * : Orazone appears to be her old self again, and should go well over seven furlongs. ■ • • — * Royal Acre will be hard to 'beat over the sticks these holidays. • • • ' The Awakino Cup (was won by the locally-owned Quin Abbey gelding Te Mana. Formerly owned by New Plymouth's popular lady owner, Mrs. W. D. Graham, Te Mana proved disappointing and was practically given away. * * • Te Mana was • lucky to win, as C. Crowley, on the Quarantine gelding Michael Shimose, left his run just long enough to be (beaten by a neok. • • ■'•'■■ They don't mind how often " they saddle up at Awakino. The Quarantine mare Quaraness won the Consolation m her fourth flutter during the ifternoon. v
