Made Their Debut

Cricket

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) Dunedin's disciples of the wicket and willow' made their season's debut on Saturday, when clubs •were busy trying out new stuff and old members were out for an afteryriopn's'p^liminary; - •■•■' ■ ■-•

""THE" competitions open next Saturday week, by which time six senior clubs will be ready for the fray. .The .question at present occupying the minds of all and sundry, is which of the four applicants for senior status will be chosen by the association to fill up the gap left by the demise of Eastman's Colts ' team — there being thus far no pro. coach appointed. Of the four. teams asking for affiliation to senior grade, the decision of the Association should be a toss-up between Uni-

versity ancl Christian Brothers, either of which should - be able to hold its own and maintain a capable eleven from season to season. . . All the cracks — Blunt, Galland, Dickinson, A. W. Alloo, Monk, McMullan, Shepherd, Douglas, and such promising colts as Elmes, Boyd, and Cavanagh, will again climb into flannels this season. Even the great veterans— R. C. Torrance, W. Strang and C. Chad wick are still to be seen on the scoring-boards. There should be a busy fight this year for representative honors, especially m face of A. Dunning and J. Jacobs, .ex-Auckland and Canterbury respectively, being on Dunedin swards this season.. -. ■. ■ . ■ . i Both these strong players have joined up with the Carisbrook-Club, which has a further gain ih the presence of Hawksworth, a from Nelson College, having a. reputation of being- some good behind the sticks. ' ' v - Offlcialsi were- stijl debating, the .matter of a coach for this season, and at the eleventh hour, comes an application from J. S. Taylor; of Australia, for the position of professi6nal coach to .the Otago Association. Negotiations now m hand may result m young Dunedinites being given the chance to learn something of the art of cricket as played by such great- men as Trumper, McCartney, vWoodf ull and all the rest of the AussieT ; idols. Taylor, at present, has a position' with the New South Wales Association, ' When the first ball goes' down m interclub games m Dunedin this year, it should open up the makings of a crackajack representative team for Plunket Shield honors. - ,
