Telephone System Improvement
IT is gratifying to learn from the Postmaster-general (Hon. J. B. Donald) that the incorporation of nearby district telephone services with the main systems m the four chief centres is a reform contemplated m the near future. There is no valid reason why the nearby services should remain outside the main system. . • The question of expense, of course, is bound to arise and will have to, be considered, but as' the Postmaster-General informed the House of Representatives that he saw no reason .why the P. and T. Department 'should- be run at a loss and that he considered he "should' not only look for sufficient profit to cover working expenses, but also interest and depreciation," it is obvious that there are ample funds m the Department's coffers. The advantages accruing to the public from a re-grouping of the telephone services will, be numerous. It will ensure a better service for the public, the abolition of many irritating inconveniences, and an appreciable reduction m overhead charges.
