BECAUSE of the arduous conditions under which they ' operate, they tend to lose their .temper, in' course of time, and orie or more, weak springs may cause this uneven running. : A simple way of testing-- the; valve springs. is to start the engine and let it idle. Then"' force a y screwdriver' be 9 tween two of the coils of each spring jri turn, arid' give a slight twist so that the tension of the spring will be in--creased. •=' ■■■•-- ' ' - "■■■ : . -. " Should the engine speed up at all when this is done to any one spring, it is apparent that this spring is weak, and a new one will effect a cure. : Sometimes, of. course, more than one new spring will be required. Weak valve springs are more common m small, high-speed engines than m large capacity^power units.
