Gladstone Make The Bid But Fail ;(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wairarapa Rep.) Following their defeat of Old Boys the previous week, the rapidly-improving Gladstone team made a bold bid to make a double event of it by knocking Carterton off their, perch. . THOUGH they failed, by 13 points to ,6. to lower the colors? of The redoubtable red .' fifteen.;' Glad'st-jK^ ~i}t< least had the.' satisfaction hf giving their unbeaten opponents a harder run for their money than any other combination has yet succeeded m doing. Even under the handicap of . playing a'galnst a stiff wind 'm the first half,,Gladstone at the interval appeared to have quite a good chance of turning the trick. Their forwards were holding their end up well, while. their back's i'were more eri.terprising. -7 , -.. '. ''.'•; ' The. game was far from being a first- ' class exhibition. 1 • The Carterton backs, although getting ' any amount of'-
chances, did not. show anything ''.like; the form they" dis-" 1 played against Old Boys. Hart was not : quite so smart- as usual it\ getting 1 the ball away and • was more often caught m posses--1 sion. Bob Booth was. a ! great factor -m cramping the ' style of the red backs. 1 Denby failed to improve matters by hanging on a- trifle long, with ,the re--1 suit that Hender-
son was snowed under before he had time to gather the ball m. Burgess, at centre, who has been Carterton's most prolific scoring man to, date, therefore, had no real /chance, while the wingers, Moore and; Fitzgerald, had never a gallop till the second spell was well 1 under way. Moore made three great efforts to cross m the second spell, but fast as he is, he was unable to get past McLeod and Randal Booth, Fitzgerald was still a seml-crlpple . from the injury he received In the Bay match, and played on the right wing Instead of his usual position. Jensen, at full-back, made more mistakes than usual, and taken all through, . the play of the Carterton backs was nothing to write home about. Henderson was m good goal-kicking form and by converting two tries and notching a penalty goal accounted for seven of Carterton's 13 points. ; Dick Nunn played quite a fair game behind the Gladstone pack, but was penalised too often for picking the ball put of the scrum. ' * . ■' Randal Booth is apparently a fixture at first five-eighths and his strong running gave Carterton most trouble.
