LESSER HANDICAPS
Minor Hastings Races Are Of Good Size
CLUB SHOULD BENEFIT
The Hawkes Bay club can do with a good meeting and t!hii week a bit of the money should come its way.
WONDERFUL nominations were received and it will Indeed be surprising if the acceptances are not extremely big. In the five minor races the first day there is promise of big fields. Without having- the acceptances to guide, the task of sifting down is none too easy, Locarno Is now m aplace that will be difficult for him to Tjln from, and he may be worried out -of It. On the other hand his class may carry him through. ■ Atareria stays well, but to date has not been reliable. Ballyfarnon is another in-and-out customer. Mountain Crag showed at Masterton that he was going to be a power this winter. At the death knock it may be Atareria and Locarno. The High Weight crowd' are much of, the muchness, outside of the top-weight, RedyFuchsia. The change of quarters may have agreed with Acred and he reads as well as anything else. Curtsey has been a, long time coming to light but another local, Clavers, turns up every so often. In going, for Hunting. Boy. and Clever m the Nursery, punters should be close to the mark. Hunting Boy was unlucky at Tauherenikau, while Clever had good form early m. the summer. Several other winners are engaged;-
Royal Flyer, Valpre. Cuticle, My Own, Te Awha, Courtlike and Royal Dine all come .under this category. The two. top-weights, however, read the best of the field.. There is every show of backers getting tied- up when it comes time to pick the Poukawa Handicap. The field is big and form somewhat varied. The first four on the list — Bernera, Zippor, Brown Sugar and Second Thought— are all recent winners, and lower down there is Sylvan Dell, St. Melba and Den. It was m this race last year that Keen returned the big price and there may . be one m store this week. - Two that will not be at long odds are Brown Sugar and Second Thought. The open mile and a-furlong should see good support for Teri, which seems best at home at this distance; . Kaiti^znay run. this out -solidly, arid it is.kriown that Starichibn will.
