Cauliflower should be placed m the saucepan head downwards so that no scum may by any chance settle on the white portion. In blowing out a candle hold it high and blow upwards— this prevents the grease from scattering. If eggs are cracked, put a little vinegar m the water— they will then boil as well as undamaged ones, The secret of success -with oil or spirit stoves is to keep them, will filled. They should never be allowed to burn out so that the wick becomes charred. When cleaning the stove add a little alum to the stove polish— it helps to keep the stove bright and shining. If brass curtain rods are occasionally rubbed over with a cloth moistened with kerosene or machine oil, the rings will slide more smoothly when the curtains are drawn. If a large vessel of water is put into the oven after the cooking is finished it will be quite hot by the time you are ready to wash up. When boiling salt meat always put a little 'sugar m the water — it will remove the saltiness. The flavor of mustard will be much impro,ved if a pinch of salt is added when mixing. Equal parts of salad oil, turpentine and pumice powder will remove paint spots from windows. Two or three small pieces of white soap added to the water will help to make cut flowers last longer. Clothes will damp more evenly if sprinkled with hot water instead of cold. ; A pad of cloth dipped m hot water and applied to the part will often stop a boot or shoe from pinching. The pad should be allowed to remain on until quite cold. . When eggs crack m boiling water" sprinkle some salt m the water and this will prevent the whites from coming through. ■•■>■•"" Milk puddings often get burnt. Remove the burnt skin, add some more milk and a little butter and re-bake m a slow oven. A few drops of lemon added to the water when mixing pastry will make it lighter and remove any taste ; of fat or lard. ' : . A little turpentine is an excellent thing for. softening shoe polish that has become hard. Potatoes, as they get old, are much improved by the addition of a little sugar to the water.
