WHY THE FAN-BELT JUMPS
WHY a fan belt should jump its pulleys when it is tight enough may seem like a mystery to those motorists who have boen at the wheel when this sort of thing has happened. The explanation, however, is simple enough. If .the fan isn't properly lubricated it will bind at high speed, slow down and force the belt to jump off. The trouble is always accompanied by a light screech from under the hood just before the belt jumps. This signifies that the fan bearing is overheating and starting to bind. ■ Because such trouble usually occurs at higher speed the car-owner is more apt to figure that the belt flies off when it travels faster. So he tightens it up a little more and ma^es matters worse. If the fan beari»n isn't Drooerly Jubricated its binding will be sufficient to cause even a 'V-type belt to jump.
