THE success of the Maple — Statesman combination m the Caulfield 1 and Melbourne Cups knocked the books a "sixer" In both Sydney and Melbourne and several took the count. Several did, not wait for the count— they disappeared on the first train after the Flemington event was run and won.. Visiting New Zealand at the present time is a well-known racing man— he has ridden them, trained them and owned them. He supported the. winning way for a heap of money, but he was stiff enough to get welched for a considerable portion. He was telling the story the other day, and the joke to all listening was that he was taken down by a book who has any amount of enemies m a town called Palmeraton. He was well known there before he hiked off, gone but not forgotten to the other side. (
