Just "Monty"
SOME men reflect throughout their life the influence of their youthful environment — such an one is Monty Miller, surveyor, of Auckland, who , m the days of his childhood roved amid the glorious scenery near 1 the Whangarei Heads^ fishing, swimming and rambling m search of adventure. Since . those rather distant • days, "Monty" has m his professional capacity travelled over many square miles of the North. Island, taken the rough with the smooth, "but never finding life a dull or drab affair, for whether it be fish, fowl or flora, he always discovers something ,to engage his enthusiasm or wonder, while, if needs be he can cai-ry a load which would not disgrace a pack-horse or spear a fish- with a skill equal to any . Maori. Of woodcraft or lore he' has an unending fund of information, and, unlike many a New Zealander, there is not a tree or shrub he cannot name offhand, and he has a host of stories of the rugged men of rugged and more breezy times when a man was not classed by the value of the car he drove or the clothes he wore. If there is one ; thing the popular "Monty" likes better than another, it is to be away from the sound of the city's din and its hustling moneygrubbers, and m the heart of the bush where the tui's melodious notes or the native pigeon's coo is all . there is to break the silence, he is at home and as young as two odd score of years allow him to be. j
