New Blood Out At Dunedin ■ (From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) After retarding the opening of Dunedin cricket with two consecutive wet Saturdays, rain put a further damper on the game by breaking m on last Saturday's second stage- 'of \t he': first matches •of the> competition. ■:. x . pONSEQUENTDY,' it- is yet early to voice an opinion 1 as to whether the association acted : -wisely m allowing two additional '. senior teams to take the pitch this season. In their debut, the two hew teams — "Old' Boys" and "Colts" — have been closely watched. The Colts; especially, are under the eyes of critics, the team comprising likely material from last season, under the -guardianship of professional coacher Eastman. The young- bloods, however, made a pretty miserable start without the stabilizing presence of their chief who arrived m Dunedin too late to take part m the previous Saturday's opening-, and was therefore not eligible for last Saturday. Grange, with Galland, Knight and McMillan as the backbone of the team, piled up 257 against the novices, who were only able to register a measly 86, thereby giving their opponents a very decisive two- point win., Silver was the only Colt to reach double figures, which he managed with a solid effort for 41. Elmes was the destructive ti'undler for Grange, taking seven wickets for 25. The Old Boys team , did somewhat better, and collected a narrow win from Dunedin by five runs on the first innings. Matheson, who is bound for Auckland next month, gave a splendid exhibition, with the leather, and putting on a lot of pace, netted 5 for 68. Dickinson, for the new team, was the outstanding- batsman, with a clover 63 before Matheson caught and bowled him. The other- meeting was between Carisbrook and Albion, the former taking the honors on a first-innings victory. Blunt (30) V .Douglas '(39), Cameron (37) and McLeod not out (46), were the chief contributors to a 219 total.— Albion 165. Action and Thrills NECESSITY is the mother of. invention, as shown by the enterprising move of the Otago Athletic Centre the Saturday before last, when motor-cycle racing was "brought into the programme. The result brought a financial smile to the Centre's erstwhile : dull outlook, and other athletic' bodies which are ifinding it hard to hold the ; interests of the modern public might take the hint. i Though full of action, foot-racing ; lacks the thrills which draw. a Satur-day-afternoon crowd, but intersperse • the human element with petroleum i prowess, and the turn-stiles are kept : working on all cylinders. That is, of ! course, if the gate returns at Forbury Park are any criterion. The question . is— will it last? It is rumored that . Forbury Park will not be the scene of , another such mixture, . and the ! O.C.A.A.A. authorities have their eyes . on Wingatui — but. that's well out of town!
