Whispers From Wanganui
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wangariui Rep.) CFISODE has had a bad spin so far *-* this season, what with seasonal troubles and soreness, but the Limond filly appears to be all right again now, and is m work once more. If she goes on all right she will probably be able to race at Auckland at Christmas, as she looks 0.X., but she has been allowed to drop out of the Feilding Stakes. # # * Acred showed fair form last season, and should do better as a five-year-bid. He is engaged at the Otaki and Feilding meetings. ' ■ * . * . * . A colt foal by Hunting Song out of Civilisation has just come to light. This youngster ought to prove good, as Hunting Song's stock give much promise and Civilisation has produced some brilliant performers. # . . * ♦ T. A. Duncan's luck continues. The withdrawal of Rapier left Laughing .Prince with weak opposition in' the Canterbury Cup. The Australian-bred horse won as he liked. # » # Whether or not he is up to good weight-for-age form, the fact remains that Laughing Prince fs a better horse than some think. In any case, he is winning a lot of money for his owner. # * * Glenross is not likely to race again until the late autumn.. He went amiss on the eve of the' Wanganui spring meeting, but is all right again. However, he will be kept/Until the tracks become soft, as he is a great galloper m the mud. ,#* • ' The two-year-old Glenartney In the Fordell stable is on the small side, but gives promise. He will not be raced probably until the autumn. *V * / * Henna has not had a race so far this season, but is likely to be seen out at Levin. # # # If Avro was one that could be depended upon to do his best, he would look a moral to win a race or two at the Otaki and Feilding meetings on his Waverley running. « .» • ' . Limosa went a bit sore after .the Waverley meeting,: but . is back on the tracks. #, # # The Waverley Racing Club made a profit of about £800 but of the Labor Day meeting. The committee intend providing increased facilities for in^ vestors and making other improvements,' which will still further popularize the club's meetings. '* # # * Though he had given evidence of having slipped, t > the. weight was kept up on Reremoana at Riccarton. This led to O. Cox cutting his trip. short and returning to Hawera without waiting for the conclusion of the C.J.C. meeting.
HIS LAST I AST week was Fred Tilley's last trip *** to Riccarton — for some time at any rate. The Fordell trainer is going to retire and have a trip round the world. What with winning the two weight-for-age cups he has every reason to recall his latest, and last visit to Christchurch. COME of the apprentice riding up *~* north is absolutely shocking, and it will pay the mentors m charge of the lads to try and point out to them some of their faults. QN Wenday's fencing display at Whangarei she will hardly ever make a reliable hurdle performer. 'She seems too small, and will never head off anything really good. 1 i • "DROBABLY a blessing m disguise," *\ was the comment of a horseowner when his horse suffered a broken leg and had to be destroyed at a recent meeting up north. HE BOLTED r\ENIER, which . was expected m the Seymour at Riccarton on Saturday, took hold of the bit and bolted. Len Pine had no show of stopping him and it was not tilltwo miles had been covered that he got the upperhand. The horse was brought back to the cage arid the race run withriut him. It was the only thing to do m the circumstances.
QUITE RIGHT THE late closing hour of acceptances 1 at Riccarton has got owners and trainers annoyed. Quite rightly they contend that ten o'clock .is too ]ate and last week a petition was signed for presentation to j the club, asking that the hour be. brought forward. URBD WADDELL took four horses to *■ Riccarton, but only two went home —Speed Light and Beacon Light. Lucky Light was sent home, while Cossack Chief went into Ted Scoullar's care. TT was given, out at Riccarton that * there was a likelihood of Honour not being present at Ellerslie for the Foal Stakes. TT is said that an apprentice kicking A about is due to get a set-back one of these days. GOING FAST • THE going at Flemington on Satur- * day last was like lightning. Gothic m winning the mile and a-half Fisher Plate went 2.29 L lowering the existing record by a second. Later m the day Bacchus, m winning the fourteen furlong handicap, equalled the existing record set by ..Commendation at Trentham. THERE is no rest for the wicked. *■ Black Mint ran m the first' race the third day at Riccarton and then later came out m the Canterbury Cup to collect the £80 third money. IT will, take some weight to stop Smithereens on the West Coast at Christmas time. OILVER RULE, after bleeding again *^ at Christchurch, will not be persevered with, but is to go to the stud. . She will visit , Nigger Minstrel this year. DEREMOANA should be °at his best ** at Xmas time. > . J. BROWN has m hand a couple of promising youngsters m Chief Link, a full brother to Silver Rule and Alarmist, a full sister to Te Atiawa.
BACK HOME Q. D. GREENWOOD, after a trip around the other end of the earth, arrived back m Christchurch on the morning 'of the Oaks. In the afternoon he had the pleasure of seeing his own bred filly, Pride, successful m the fillies' classic. A PRICE was put on Royal Saxon during the progress of the Cup meeting, but the reply, "Fifteen hundred," ended negotiations, there and, then. TARRY WIGGINS became a family man during the progress of the i New Zealand Cup meeting. It's a daughter. X BUYER was anxious to buy either Broadmoor or Impertinence during Cup week, but he thought the figures quoted on the high side. MENDIP failed m his outing: among the open class company the last day at Riccarton, but he was not too lucky over the last furlong. A good second class handicap will come his way ere long. MISSED AGAIN W7HEN Mandane missed m the Metro-. " politan the presence of an entire m the race was blamed for her failure. On Saturday when she was quite all right, she could not come on and win the Fendalton. Christmas time will find her right at the top of her form.
WINS TWO MOT the best of luck has pursued Sid. Reid m recent times, and he has had more than his share of minor placings. At Kiccarton on Saturday he got two winners home, however. Historic, a favorite, scored, and then Panther, an outsider, surprised the world. A little later the third one of the team, Roi de "Val, could not sustain the winning sequence. He finished third. THERE was a lot of squealing over A handicapping at Riccarton and some of the complaints were m order. TF Chlldsplay stands up to training A much longer a lot m this world will be surprised. FRED JONES has two handy sorts of two-year-olds m Belcaire and Loot. They will win when they get over their greenness. - BERT MORRIS got held up m the tapes at the start of the Oaks and his neck suffered severely. ? HE IS GOOD FIRST' SIGHT was a dual winner at the Cup meeting. He won the Riccarton Handicap with 8.9 and thenfailed the second day with 9.11. The last day,, with 7.13 m the Fendalton, he scored comfortably over the last hundred yards. | He is going to win several more handicaps before the weight finds him put. THE professional riders have nothing to fear if the exhibitions given by amateurs at the Show m Christchurch is any criterion. NORTH ISLANDERS who have not seen Hoylake since Tom Lltfyd took the grey over are going to get a shock when they do run into him. He was a picture to look at last week. CEATOUN is shaping well at Stratford. He had not been up long prior to Waverley and should be produced m great hick at Xmas. A Stratford Cup would be popular and possible, too.
