His Old Story
/JEORGE William Dennister's tale about finding a lady's handbag near the new railway station, wfiich he told m the Auckland' Police Court to Magistrate Levien, was not believed, for Dennister had told similar stories before. In fact, the last time he tried to put that story over he had served a sentence.
T,he handbag contained money, two diamond rings, a gold ring and several other articles, valued at £50, and they were identified m court by Elsie Nichols, who owned them.
Dennister conducted his own case from the dock. In questioning the owner of the property, he asked whether she had receipts for the rings, whereupon she waxed indignant.
"Indeed, I have not got the receipts; I have had one of those rings for twenty-three years. It was an engagement ring," she said.
Dennister; "Oh, I'm glad to see you have got them back again!"
He was sentenced to three months' hard labor, with an additional two years' reformative detention.
