The Voice From The Back Seat
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Wellington Representative.) WONDERFUL how middle age falls, for the giddy flapper. Quite a " well-known , medical gentleman of the Empire City, still debonair, though veering' towards the sere and yellow of life, has a penchant for delightful, gay outings with trim little flappers. ' A regular dog, in fact. A ring on the telephone one evening in the quiet of his study. An intriguing proposal to make a fourth in a little joy-ride. "What are the girls like, are they sporty?" asked middle-aged Adonis. "Oh, yes, very nice, indeed/' fell pleasantly upon his pink ear. "I'll pick you up at a quiet spot." The indispensable cocktail In his hip-pocket, fragrant cigarettes in another pocket, he waited in a glow of anticipation at the appointed rendezvous. The car arrived — the very way it sidled up contained a promise in its graceful lines. "Get in beside me," whispered his sportive friend, "the girls are in the, back seat— in # the dark." Away purred the quartette, out of the bright lights into the romantic obscurity of country roads. In the back seat feminine mystery, soft and fragrant. . Dr. Middle Age thought it time to break the .spell with a round of cocktails. The car pulled up, and a feminine treble from the back seat.devastatingly familiar, piped out: ."Hello, Pop, what are you doing here?" ' • ■ *• ■ / Lights up — and Lothario looked into the saucy, laughing eyes of his own daughter. "Home, John," gasped "Pop." A demure miss and rather crestfallen papa munched toast and exchanged glances at breakfast next morning.
