Michel's Record
AMONG the members of the august body that reclines luxuriously on
plush -covered seats m the Legislative Council during the Parliamentary sessions is the Hon. -H. L. Michel, of Hokitika.
But the plush -chair of the Council Chamber m which he sits is to H.L.M. merely a symbol of the dignity of that excluaive assembly.
For he was not reared m a plush - chair atmosphere of ease and idle luxury.
Michel landed at Hokitika as a lad m 1886, when ijlush-chairs were at a premium and where rough-and-ready conditions were the common portion of life m the gold-rush days.
From his early manhood, young Michel took a keen interest m the district and played no small part m evolving- stable conditions out of the pot-pouri of life as, it was lived m the middle "sixties."
Politics attracted him m after years and . he was bold enough to stand against Dick Seddon— without success, need it be said?
But he threw himself heart and soul into every civic activity in 1 the placa and at the time of the formation of the National Government he was called to the Upper House.
In Hokitika he is a warm supporter Of almost everything and increasing years see liim still as active as ever.
