AFTER A BALL
Girl's Adventure On Her Way Home (From "N.ZvTruth's" West Coast Rep.) She was only sixteen, but the dancing germ had entered her blood, and, when other girls of her age were tucked between the sheets, she was m the arms of men much ol.d.er than herself, whirling around and around the danceroom at Waiuta; one of the West Coast mining townships. WHAT happened early on the morning of May 13, should be a vivid memory for a lons time m the mind of Myra "Williams, as it no doubt will be m the mind of the man m the case, Edward Peatey, a miner, if only as a result of the good money it has cost the small hours of the unlucky thirteenth, the musicians packed up their instruments and the lights went Before that, according- to the story told by Myra to Magistrate W. Meldrum, Peatey had asked if he might =cc her home, but she turned him down. However, he followed her when she left the:hall. .' : ..' •What those responsible for her, welfare were thinking of to , allow a child of her age to be out, unacconjpanied, 'm the early morning, was not explained. . . • '. Myra said that when Peatey ' again approached her, she told him she did not want his company. Undismayed, he grabbed her around the waist and attempted to drag her towards a nearby stable, but she screamed. Her call brought another man on the scene, whereupon Peatey let her go home. , A different story was told by Peatey. He reckoned that he had been favored with several dances by Myra and that she had allowed him to take her home on several previous occasions. ' . . He went out of the hall with { her and they walked along- the road, talking as they walked. She did not object to walking along the road with him. He admitted that he became amorous and tried to kiss the girl, .but denied that he seized her round the waist. When she screamed, he let her go at once. . The magistrate showed his disbelief by fining Peatey £10 and ordering him to pay £2/5/4 costs. WANTED SELL. Military Clothing (Renovated) at reduced prices at Disposal Sales Depot.
