FOR LINOLEUM
Varnish Will Improve Your Home ... Varnish is looked upon by many as merely a beautifying medium. It is — and it is something more. It is one of the most valuable preservatives known. ..'.■■ WARNISHED linoleum would save i lot of time In polishing.. If thi linoleum Is just laid, It, can bevar nished Immediately, but If It has beet down some time, then It' must be thor oughly cleaned and scrubbed untl every trace of grease has been removed When dry, apply the varnish, one o: two coats, and your linoleum will las longer as well as looking infinitely bet ter. ■■■.'. All kinds of paintwork may be treat, ed 1n a similar manner; that Is, thor. oughly cleaned, allowed to dry anc then varnished. . It should, be put on thinly and yoi will be surprised to find how the coloi is preserved, also what a long time i' will last before looking shabby. The one drawback to using varnish is that It is "tricky." If you buy a ready-to- use preparation, it must be kept m a warm place; otherwise, it may thicken and you will have some difficulty In working it. ' The amateur who attempts to thir varnish, either by warming it or-add-ing turpentine, often meets with disaster, for as often as not they weaker it or cause it to bubble. As varnish is so sensitive to temperature, the can should never be allowec to stand straight on the, ground; t piece of old cloth, folded Into a thicl pad, will prevent it being brought int( contact with the cold or damp. Always do your 1 varnishing on a fine sunny day, and when you have plenty of time on hand. It Is a job that cai so easily be spoiled by hurrying. Another point to remember is alwayi to uses a proper brush— not one tha has been used for something else. By a proper brush is meant one o the perfectly dry, long-haired, spring: sort with a square -cut edge; above all do not fill the brush with varnish, bu take .up ever so little each time .on thi tip. of the : hairs. , A wire stretched, across the top #rthe can will enable you. to drain ' •ipff^^ny^ .superfluous varnish, thus .^eepih'g^ the .layer thin ;and.even. rWif^puv^are iiuhable to complete thi ;3p!bi^&a3v;eV^your. brushes' suspendei oyerhight with their tips just touchinj the varriishi . '* ... ; ; .. •■ You cannot put. them m turpentine for the tips will spoil , the finish of you work;, you cannot allow them to dr; or they will harden to such an exten as to be of no further use to you.
