He Makes Opposition Look Cheap (By "The Toff.") The Palmerston North-owned and trained gelding, Padlock, made a high-class field m the President's Handicap look silly. OB jumped out of the barrier and led for three furlongs, when Roicole headed him. So Hughes trailed -with Padlock till a mile and a-quarter had been completed. Then he went to the front and stayed there to win very easily by three lengths. And he wound the watch up pretty tightly. He stepped the first quarter of a mile m 38 1/5 sec; mile m 2.15 4/5; mile and a-half m 3.21 2/5, and the full journey m 4.26 3/5. which makes him eligible for the next New Zealand Trotting-^pup. Padlock is a brother to Rawene, which won the Oxford Handicap earlier m the day, and like his sister he was bred by the late 8,. Shadbolt. He is trained for J. A. Mitchell by. W. Hughes, who has had many nice winning 1 drives behind Loch Moigh j and Padlock this season. Peterwah was m third place and going well when he broke badly at the bend going out of the straight. After Roicole and Peterwah had dropped back, Author Jinks, Talaro, Queen's Own, Loganwood and Black Admiral went after Padlock. Three furlongs from home, Talaro slipped through on the rails into second place, and Queen's Own followed him through, with Author Jinks still on deck. Going to the home bend, Black Admiral signalled defeat, and Talaro, Queen's Own and Author Jinks tried to overhaul Padlock. Of the party, Author Jinks was first to weaken. Talaro and Queen's Own finished well, but they could not get near Padlock, which held them cheap at the finish. Waitaki Girl broke at the start and Taurekareka ran like a dog.
