TALE OF WIT AND HAZARD
(From "N Z. Truth's" Special Wellington Representative.,) IT was Scotty's night at the «school»-that is to say, at the joyous big 1 room m Manners Street, Wellington, where 'tis said, men of f^* and occupations threw the dice sometimes till day broke . . .and some Had SoX" warned up like the old days when he was m khaki .A ruddy sergeant of police commenced with a most obnox.ous npte-book to enter names.' Scotty was about eighth man from the left He hated having to divulge his name and respectable address. As the seventh cJlprit confessed his name before heaven and the sergeant, the latter was suddenly called to another part of the room. • Scotty detected a wonderful opportunity and squeezed up between allecied hazard experts three and four. The sergeant returned and con- ? ini fed where Scotty should have been. So far so good-.f he could have escaoed there and then through the ceiling or down the drain-pipe. A free motor- ride to the police station, m which consternat.on had' reacted to a boisterous humor among the captured crew. , At the station another ruddy sergeant with a note-book— the biggest notebook Scotty had ever seen m his life. His slow Caledonian wit was working overtime, as he waited his inevitable turn. He suddenly pushed through the jumble of all sorts and sizes and threw a£s note across the table towards the sergeant. "What's this?" gasped the surprised sergeant. "Ah want to bail out ma freend," spoke up Scotty m a tone of terrible anxiety. The ruddy sergeant went several shades ruddier. "Your friend!" he barked at Scotty. "How did you get m here!" Without waiting for Scotty's truthful reply, he bellowed at the constable: "Put this man out! Didn't I tell you not to let anyone come m here!" "Get out!" he flung after Scotty. "And come back later if you want to bail your friend out." And such is the freemasonry of the alleged dic^ experts that not one of the unlucky ones gave the show away.
