GO into the Ford sales and service establishment m Wellington on
business bent and m all probability you'll encounter Lieut. -Colonel Henry E. Avery, one-time Q.M.G. for the New Zealand Defence Forces.
Quiet and unassuming, you'll hardly guess he's been connected with defence matters for the best part of two decades — and he is still a comparatively young man. Henry Esau Avery joined up with the N.Z.S.C. when it was first formed, 'way back m 1911, but now — after the lapse of all these years and w h en he had climbed to th.c top of the ladder m his chosen profession — he has decided on civilian business for a change and has exchanged the uniform for mufti. An old Wellington College, boy, H.E.V. wwains — m his more athletic days — a keen footballer, and has represented Wellington, the North Island and New Zealand at Rugby. Nowadays he enthuses over the good old game from the bank.
During the war he managed his end of the stick for our little army m France and went right through to the occupation and evacuation of German territory.
During 1920-21 he represented New Zealand at the War Office and then returned home to take up his old duties. ,
Now he's had a surfeit of war and all its glories, but as a qualified accountant m his. present business, he can look back m reminiscent vein on the days when he wore the King's uniform.
