EASY KILLING FOR "TIGER"
George Thompson Lasts Only Five Rounds With Negro Payne (By Cable.— From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Sydney Representative.) '"TIGER" PAYNE had an exercise gallop on Saturday last at the Sydney * Stadium, when he met George Thompson for the third time. In the previous contests he had knocked out Thompson m one round and eight rounds. The result was that Thompson did not look a /"«<;" for the negro, but Payne is scheduled to leave Australia at an early date and the promoters wanted to provide a couple of matches for him before He S io e< m went Thompson for the third killing. Despite the one-sided aspect of the contest, well over £800 was paid for the bout. Thompson was quelled m five rounds. ■ . i_ • In the early going the white boxer made somewhat of a showing against his immense colored opponent by carrying the fight to him. Payne's punches curled round his neck and George was cheered to the echo every time he bustled to close quarters and pelted blows at his opponent's body. , The big sensation of the contest came m the fifth round. Thompson backed Payne to the ropes and there landed a right very low. Payne ' sank to the floor m evident pain, indicating that he had been fouled. But the referee counted over him and the crowd cheered Thompson. At five seconds the "Tiger" rose, stalled a while and then slung a wicked left to Thompson's body that rolled the local man m the resin for the full count. Thompson's finish was surprisingly sudden and proved conclusively that he is no match for the colored man. Next week-end Payne engages m his last fight m Australia, when he is opposed to Billy Harms. On Friday next at Leichhardt stadium, Lachie McDonald meets Ted Monson m a bout advertised as the middleweight championship of Australia for a purse of £200.
