Joy King Will Again Bring Joy To Punters' Hearts (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) When Joy King's mentor expressed the view before the Easter that his charge would again finish m front of Bright Glow, he was right.
AS it turned out, Joy King was up | about fifth and Bright Glow about seventh. Their good form at Trentham was accepted by northern punters for the pah" retained public favor till the end. But to the surprise of most people, neither found a place-nor m fact ever looked likely winners on the Journey, which all goes to show that the Ellerslie Easter, though not generally expected, proved a much harder race to win than the Trentham mile. As proof of this, the time for the eight furlongs up north, which is a much slower track than Trentham, was the best part of a second m advance of that registered m the Thompson. It was a case of going all the way m the Ellerslie Easter— and it is mostly so m all races up north these days, where the stake-money on offer induces large fields. Joy King and Bright Glow were Nos. 2 and 10 respectively at the barrier, but it must not be inferred from this that Joy King was m the more favorable position of the pair. It is no great advantage to be near the inner from the mile post at Ellerslie for there is the best part of a
furlong to go before the fence of the course proper is reached. "N.Z. Truth" has observed many from No. 1 headed off m the scramble before that point is reached. It was the same with Joy King m the great rush of Saturday last, though it would not have been sound policy to have raced him off his legs early on with 8.13 aboard. However, Reed missed his objective of getting Joy King- into a favorable position. As a matter of fact, he was back with In the Shade m the rear after three furlongs. Under the circumstances, Joy King did really well to finish up fifth with 8 13 It' should still pay to remember this performance so far. as Joy King is concerned. He appears to be m the right trim to go on to further victory up to a mile at least. PUL.AL.IE went for six m the Great *-• Easter and then did the disappearing trick. Punters will not be so keen to rush m and back her next time she runs. iMmiiitHiiiiitimiuitHiiimiiimiiHiniiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniinnmtHminnmimiiiiiiiinnTiiiHinimnnnr
