No False Pace In G.N. Oaks (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) When Bert Morris went out to ride Damaris m the Great Northern Oaks, he was evidently well instructed not to allow the race to be run at a false pace, for if the favorite was to suffer defeat it was to be through such tactics. WITH Wild Pigeon not quite herself on the day, Damaris was the only member of the party left m with reasonable staying qualities. More than a moderate pace had to be maintained if one of the sprinters was not to snatch the stake. Morris was not there to let them have it all their own way. During the middle stages he ran up to the leader, Ti Tree, and began to force the pace, with the result that he had the field doing their best m behind him before the home turn. Damaria then experienced little difficulty racing home m front by two and a-half lengths from Auriculus and Ti Tree, after having compassed the twelve furlongs m 2.36 3/5, the sectional times being: 3 furlongs, 405.; half-mile, 52 2/5; five furlongs, 1.7 2/5; 6 furlongs, 1.20 3/5; 7 furlongs, 1.33; mile, 1.47. Doree never shaped like a stayer, and so far as winning prospects were concerned, was done with long before the business end was reached.
