Had Native Prince gone a bit more kindly the first part of his race on Tuesday, Peter Riddle's charge may have won. However, he was unlucky striking The Shrew in such great heart over the business end. Both improved on their times.
The reason given for Great Actress going back on the field last Tuesday and causing two others to fall, was that she was tiring. When she does not tire she will race up to her boom, for she appeai-ed to be going easily in front until Native Prince ranged up alongside her. She should prove the goods at some time or other.
Direct Morning raced on opening day as if he is due shortly.
Sister Beatrice will win a number of trotting events when the cracks are missing. They planked it on her in the Rowe Handicap and evidently not without reason. ■

The Southland-owned pacer, Donside, was present at Ashburton where he carried a lot of money. He met with interference soon after the start and this cost him some ground and his position.
Vestas was tried in saddle at Ash burton, but he went disappointingly.
Bon Wood, which was one of the best of good things for Ashburton, settled his chance by going to pieces at the start.
