Despite his improved showing at recent meetings, Peter the First was allowed to pay a long price at Ashburton. He got to the front a mile and ahalf from home and though tackled by several of his opponents at various stages of the trip, he hung on to score b3 r a neck from the much improved Little Johnnie. Had Fairlight gone steadily all the way he would have won.
