IN FIRST
MICHAEL JAMES ROONEY, in * a true spirit of camaraderie decided to assist his friend on to the tram near the Government Buildings, in Wellington, but the tram conductor thought Michael's friend had too much on board to get aboard his tram as a passenger and tram conductors are discerning. He told Michael J. Rooney of his suspicions and asked him to desist in his efforts in boarding the car. Michael had sufficient "in" to make him obstreperous and he also brought into play his helping hand again — only this time he swung it to the conductor's jaw. Charged with assault in the Wellington Police Court before Magistrate Page, he pleaded guilty under provocation. To his recent punching post — the conductor — who was a witness in the box, Rooney said: "I thought you were going to smack me, so I got in first." It cost Rooney £5, expenses— and a magisterial admonition. ■iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii^
