JtJTrom "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) What was probably the outstanding cricket performance m the country on Saturday last was the bowling feat of ten wickets for ten runs achieved at Auckland m a Friendly Society game, when the Good intent Lodge played the Remuera Lodge. TTHB Good Intent batted first and l x scored 144 while their opponents went to the crease and could only ecrape a mere two dozen and four m their first strike, managing to get 54 on the second attempt. , In the first innings of the Remuera lodgeites, they could make nothing of the bowling of Waters and history may have to wait many a day ere it betters jhls ten wickets for ten runs. The trundler had the opposition completely mystified while m the second Innings he took five wickets for 21 runs, making his analysis . for the match 15 wickets for 31 runs. v In the Auckland Association matches there was little that could be termed surprising. North Shore, after their gigantic score of 418 last week, registered a four-point win over Grafton Who, m two innings, managed to pass the Devonport total, but the Shore men had time to put on 121 m their second istrike and thereby bag the possible points. I. W. Cooper, the Edenite, enhanced his reputation on Saturday with a very attractively-played innings for 86, against Varsity. Cooper can hardly be denied his place m the Auckland reps, this Beason, for m addition to his batting prowess he is a handy change bowler and m the field he is agile and always alert. Bowley made his re-appearance for T.M.C.A. and came to light with a characteristic display for 65, finding no trouble with the bowling of the United Suburbs men, though the coach went down to a very straight and simple delivery. BATfIMHN NOT UP Batting In Auckland, bo far this sea- ' hob, judged a* a whole, has not made the most of the conditions and opportunities offered. It must be stated that the bowling is the better part of the game so far. The prominent players of last season have not so far sorted themselves out ahd there have not been many Impressive displays by young material that would give the indication of a find before the Beason is out. On Saturday there was a good deal of indiscriminate cricket and some of the youngsters seem to have an idea that when they take centre it is the eignal for . fireworks. There is something wrong In the temperament of, some of the youngsters and while the publio has a decided objection to "sleepy hollow" cricket such as some of the leading exponents have indulged m this season already, blind slogging is not cricket. In the Ponsonby innings against Parnell some of the youngsters were given a chance with the opposing attack at the commencement of the second strike and things became right merry. Commons, who opened ' his shoulders last week went m to open the Innings and he laid about him with the utmost sangfroid. In one over from Veteran Anthony, lie hit off 28 runs, collecting Aye boundaries, one sixer and a brace and he was caught on the boundary with his score ' at" .42* after a ( ' hectic ten minutes' smiting. ! There was a queer scattering of the field while this youth was at the wicket ; and he certainly seemed to have a charmed life though he oertainly put < sufficient "ginger" into his strokes to put the leather well out of the reach of any fieldsman. Very few deliveries passed unpunished during the few 'minutes he occupied the crease and : they Were not all worthy of such scant respect It cannot be said yet, however, that cricket has settled down and it Will be a week or two ere i.things begin to take shape for l the determination of representative honors.
