THEIR WAY AT WINTON
Will Celerity IL Live Up To Her Name ?
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Christchurch Representative.) The ex-Canterbury mare, Ace of Hearts, was first out and first home m the Trial Stakes at Winton. -
HER form should .be a sufficiently good indication that she ; will be prominent at the meetings which comprise the Southland -circuit at Christmas time. She now is owned by E. A. Pigeon, of Gore, where she is trained by the light harness mentor, J. R. McMurray. HEARTS TRUMPS Coomassie was sent out a hot favorite for this event. She ran a solid race, but had no chance with Ace of Hearts, who is by The Ace from Historiette. The English mare Celerity. 11. won the Winton Cup, for which she was favorite, pretty handily. .; ■ In beating Vawar'd, Bilbo and Taboo she showed that she is capable of prevailing again over a similar journey, if- not farther, for she was going very comfortably at the end. In that contest,. Schottische demonstrated that she is going to stay. She is a good sort and one that will do well m rich events to be decided m Southland next month. In the Winton Steeplechase Thistlecrown just played with the opposition. " The journey was two miles and ahalf, and when it came to business Thistlecrown just cantered home. The fact that he beat Hokioi by ten lengths lends color to his performance, and Southlanders are high on the son of Rokeby's prospects as a steeplechaser. HIGH CLASS Backers went, for the Australianbred gelding Erne m the Flying Handicap, but when the field was set m motion he never gave promise of winning. Baldowa simply romped home.
' As ■ everybody knows, Baldowa is a high-class galloper, .and it is only a
question ""of- him keeping sound to hold his own m any company. The had-tempered Jack o* Lantern took a fit into his head to down his opponents m the Barkley Handicap, and this was no trouble to him. He has been given a course,, of jumping, but * it has not tamed him any. At the same time he is likely to upset the apple-cart of some alleged certainty at any time, for he has heaps of ability. v i •- ■ . / He was followed home by the English, mare Spean Bridge, who is coming right for more serious events later on. John Bradbury looked" well at Winton, where he proved- too good for the opposition. Now that he is sound, he can be pegged off as one that will gather m a few Christmas gifts for his owner. P Queen Balboa is another "likely Southland-trained mare that is worth making a note of for future racing.
