AUCKLAND CUP

Weights Due Next

Week

The next big handicap of the season is the Auckland Cup,, run at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. MOMINATIONS closed some time ** back with forty-four entries, and even with the weights not due till the end of next- week, it can be taken for granted that the handicapper, Frank McMenamin, has a rough draft of the handicap now. There is all the material there for a fine set of figures^ Rapier, Star Stranger and Footfall, the placed horses m the New Zealand Cup are entered. Then there are Te Monanul, Count Cavour and Te Kara m the list, and they will be up m the top division. A number of three-year-olds have been accorded an entry and under this heading come Merry Mint, In the Shade, Ark Royal and Satrap, a quartet with some classic form to their credit. Three-year-olds have little success m this race and not one of that age has won this century. Just what the handicapper will make his top weight remains to be seen, but with Star Stranger, Te Monanui and Count Cayour he has the makings of agood start.
