HOW GOOD ?

Thr^e- Year-Old

Martarma

Just how good the three-year-old, Martar'ma/ is, remains to be seen, but his owner thinks highly of him.

WHEN -the Martian— Per Anna colt came under the hammer two years . back there was much opposition to secure him and he finally fell to John Porter, of Akaroa, for 800gns. Given to Fred. Christmas to train, the youngster was not* hurried and it was not till last autumn that he was asked a question. Against seasoned horses he did fairly well and there were prospects for him this year. He was - doing well on the track prior to "Wingatui, but a fall there knocked him back.

He had two races at Riccarton and after being: a long- way back finished a good fourth m the Derby. Then m the Stead Gold Cup, after setting the pace, he was just beaten' out of the money. That may or may not have been a good performance, but it was not quite good enough to come up to the figure his owner desires for -him. Five thousand is mentioned and from that it can be taken that Porter has no desire to sell.

Pei-haps he has an idea after Martarma" has finished racing to use him at the stud.-
