Beaumont's Fate
II E drinks not — neither does he "■ smoke; m fact, George Newton Beaumont claims to be free from any one of. the many vices that make for extravagant living.
So he told Magistrate Hunt at the Auckland Magistrate's Court the other .day when he was called upon to explain why he should not pay maintenance m respect of his first wife and child.
A month ago Beaumont appeared for a similar reason and it was then disclosed that George — on being divorced from his wife m 1923 — had been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay 35/- a week alimony. His affairs were then ordered to be looked, into, and the case was adjourned for a month. "He is a model butcher," said Lawyer Singer, who appeared to assist Beaumont m convincing the court that there was nothing doing, for the simple reason that there was another wife, Mrs. Beaumont No. 2, and three offspring to clajm his £5 a week. "A model butcher, but not a model husband!" added. Lawyer Les. Adams, who was there to submit the claim of Kathleen Winifred, the first wife. The order was reduced to 7/6 a week, and arrears, which totalled £354 95., were cancelled.
