Better Facilities In Our Courts
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) It is the sight of an old gentleman who sometimes makes his appearance as one of the "audience" at the Auckland Police Court that gives Kse to a suggestion that may perhaps be useful m affording relief to some of the unemployedenterprising diggers for preference. WHETHER it be his shortness of ." stature or his failing eye-sight-— probably the latter" — the old fellow has evidently • experienced some disadvantage In obtaining a clear -view on previous visits to the court, so he now goes along armed with a pair of binocular glasses! Thus he preserves himself from the contortions of neck -stretching or headtwisting and calmly surveys the central figures of the proceedings through his glasses. When he is fortunate — or early enough — to obtain a * front-rail position, the alert little man, with his elbows planted on the rails, sweeps the oourt-room m real Melbourne Cup style. Prisoner or witness comes quickly under his ready scrutiny, with an occasional focus upon the bench just to see how things are faring. : Here is the large }dea. Why not a stall -outside the public entrance to cater for those .who may be at a physical disadvantage m the very limited— and often very crowded — public auditorium of the court? There should be a ready demand for the hire of opera-glasses — or even telescopes — among the optically deficient ; while for those suffering from auricular imperfection ear -trumpets could be provided. Short men and women, could- ■■]'■ never resist the offer of a perlscibpi^'- . or a pair of stilts at, say, 6di- art hour. ' - •£'.'
