The SHOW'S THE THING
Little Audrey Lewis plays leading comedy role m "Tweekie."
"The Count"
"THE Count of Dunnowherski," a * tabloid musical comedy, is being staged by Stud Foley's Follies at His Majesty's Theatre, Wellington. It is a decidedly humorous story centring round* 1 the throne of one of the Balkan kingdoms. "N.Z. Truth" saw the "Count" played by Walter George ancl his company some years agu. Stud Foley's offering does nothing to remove the good impression of the showformed at that time.
Chinese Rudolph
UOLLYWOOD'S lure — which has n drawn thousands of boys and girls from hundreds of towns to try ancl "get into the movies" — has penetrated the stoic calm of the Oriental. Richard Dix went to Sacramento a short while ago with a company of 50 people to film scenes for his Yangtse river picture, "Shanghai Bound." The ten Chinese he took with him were augmented there by two hundred local Chinese m the mob scenes. The other day fourteen of the Sacramento Chinese returned to the Paramount studio m Hollywood with Dix and calmly announced that they will be movie actors. One of them, Cal Lysing, a 20-year-old Cantonese, is known m Sacramento as "The Chinese Valentino."
*' # * Amusement Tax
AS the amusement tax is a tax on ** admission, one way of avoiding payment would be to make the members of the audience pay when they leave the theatre.
Row en a RonaW, who was given her big chance m "Castles m the Air" at Her Majesty's, Sydney.
Irene North, bright comedienne with Tivoli Follies playing m Sydney.
Jim Gerald, well-known producer on Fullers' circuit. Above m circle — Zillah Bateman and Ellis Irving as the half-ways m "Outward Bound."
Romance Afloat
Unique Records
THE romance of the old days, when * men braved the sea m squarerigged ships — when hardships were the sailor's lot; when romance gilded the terrific struggle of man against the elements — these are the things thai. "Captain Salvation," Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's vivid drama of the high seas, brings to the screen at the Regent Theatre, Wellington, to-morrow (Friday). Lars Hanson, the Swedish actor, who scored such a notable success m "Flesh of the Devil," gives an intensely interesting characterization as the hero, a divinity student who forsakes the pulpit for the sea. Other notable characters m the cast are Ernest Torrance. Marceline Day and Pauline Stark. It might interest picture lovers to know that Flora Finch, one-time partner with John Bunny, returns to the screen m this presentation. Fred Curran, Sydney Tivoli comedian, will hold the boards during the week's presentation of this picture.
VICTOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA m "Kamennoi-Ostrow" (Rubinstein) and "Liebestraum" (Liszt). H.M.V., EBIO. The Victor Symphony Orchestra has here done a remarkable piece of work. Under the direction of Rosario. Bourdon, it plays two new and quite wonderful arrangements, of two familiar piano pieces — so familiar to-day that every movie house hears them almost hourly. The "Kamennoi-Ostrow" is reinforced by the grand organ, and effects of quite unprecedented beauty and power are produced. The companion number, too. reveals new beauties at the hands of this large organization. Rubinstein's vision of the island m the Neva, and Liszt's "Love Dream" are two of the most remarkable of nineteenth-century melodies.
Edna Dare plays Sonia, the vamp, m "Tweekie," at the Empire Theatre, Sydney.
"Seventh Heaven "
DRIVATELY screened m Wellington 1 this week was "Seventh Heaven," a William Fox film of the stage play of the same name. It is all that the most extravagant praises from publicity agents have had it, and more. It is one of the best things Fox has done for motion pictures. There's life and love m every reel, presented m an entertaining way. A cinema "symphony," "Seventh Heaven" is a triumph for those two newcomers, Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor. No team work on this year's screen record thus far exceeds m realism and artistry what these two have done m "Seventh Heaven." The picture will be screened m the principal theatres m New Zealand m the near future.
Two Good Tenors
pOLUMBIA 0683: "Rosie O'Ryan" *"' (Franklyn Baur) and "I'm Looking for a Girl named Mary" (Lewis James). Here aro two good tenors on one record — one of them extraordinarily good, though he sings a popular Irish ballad of the "latest hit" type. Franklyn Baur is the one we mean, and his voice bears a remarkable resemblance to that of the great IrishAmerican tenor, John McCormick. It has the same magnificent range and the same mellifluous ease of control. Both songs are worth hearing.
