LIMERICK'S MIGHTY EFFORT

Hopeless Position At Turn and Then Gets Up (By Cable.— From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Sydney Representative.) The Maorilanders cleaned up thousands at Warwick Farm on Saturday thanks to the victories of iVTerry Mint m the Hobartville Stakes and Limerick m the Warwick Stakes.

MERRY. MINT'S form was a big improvement on his showing at Rosehill a fortnight earlier and the way he was backed suggests that the improvement was expected. He was backed from double figures down 'to a nice price and £15,000 was taken from the books as a result of the win, though not all that amount went to New Zealanders.

Asleep had an easy win m the hurdle race and was well backed, but Arikiwai had no friends for the Hobartville Stakes and failed to show up at any part of the race. Limerick received a wonderful ovation after win- • ning the Warwick Stakes by a head from Amounis, with Commendation a head away third. Prior to the tstart, Commendation gave a great exhibition of rear-

ing and pig-rooting, but he was first away and was never further back than second until Amounis put m his claim nearing the turn. Limerick, m the meantime, was fourth, though several lengths back, and even at the home turn he was apparently a hopeless case. There he was four lengths to the bad, with Amounis and Commendation having a ding-dong go m the lead. Amounis seemed to have Commenda-

; tion well beaten half a furlong from : home, but the New Zealander battled s out every inch of the going and it was > only by a head that Amounis beat him. Limerick, m the meantime, was rapidly gaining and amid a burst of cheering he got up m time to snatch victory from Amounis by a head. It was a wonderfully game effort on Limerick's part and if the Caulfield Cup is the good thing for Commendation the betting makes him out to be,

Limerick should have a mortgage on the Metropolitan. Battlement and Royal Blood failed badly m the Glenlee Handicap and they -were never troublesome. Limerick and Commendation will fight their Warwick Stakes battle again m the Chelmsford Stakes on Saturday and the result ► should be the same L as at the Farm. |h Merry Mint is ™ also m this race and a good line as to his Derby chance

should be gained through his form, though he scarcely looks to have any chance with the other pair. Asleep, Arikiwai, The Thorn and True Blood are engaged m the minor events, while Phillipic, The Hawk, Piuthair and First Acre will all make their spring debut m some of the races of lesser importance. The Hawk is galloping well, but he has a lot of weight and a good crowd to beat m the Tramway Handicap.
