Of course, all this bother could \ not pass unnoticed for long, and an inquisitive John Hop was soon on the scene. ' • ' The, result was that David was called before Magistrate Lawry to give an account of his escapade. His counsel, speaking-to the plea of guilty which was entered, said Evans was employed m a Christchurch foundry. On the night before the occurrence he had attended rather a convivial meeting. The next day he v tpok out his car and had four.long beers. "Unfortunately," -said counsel, "the beer at the different places he visited, was different m quantity or quality and calibre. "When he afterwards drove his car down the street he heard some- *< body whistle. He looked round and the accident occurred." , A fine of £5 and his license sus-. pended for three months*was the penalty.
