PURDY MADE MEAL OF JANSEN

Fast Pace Set Left Visitor Far Behind . ■ i On Friday evening last at Wellington, Charlie Purdy had provided for him a pugilistic dinner, and the local boy did full justice to the one-rcourse menu provided for his^delectation.

j U O;R fifteen rounds Purdy gorged himL self on the person of one Raymond Jansen. - Then ""Doc - .".' Stewart reckoned he had* had enough for a , growing boy, and called the dinner off. Following on the manner m which Jansen had polished off- Trowern at Palmerston there were many who thought that Purdy would.be "cold pie" for the' Frenchman. IndeedV there was much money to support such a view, but unfortunately, for those who were inclined to m that direction, Purdy's digestion was never better : than onv the evening of last week. , I The result of the pudding they say is jn the eating. Well, Purdy, I from a pugilisticy.point of view, ate Jansen. \ ; The first morsel wetted 'his appetite, and ' like Oliver Twist of -old, ! he went | back for more, and more> and then some. Not so very.' long ago Purdy was a fastidious sort and .was very particular how he helped himself to "tho dainty dish set before the king," but last week his table manners underwent a change. | ■Instead of pecking at his food (tha.t morning after the night before procedure of attacking the old Ibacpn and eggs) he took double handfuls of Raymond. In fact, it would be quite m order to . state that Purdy was a glutton for gettingwhat he wanted. The feed, fight, or whatever it, was, was not one. There.was only one m the picture. ■ The gong to commence activities found Purdy ready; to test out his dish and though at ..-first: hie* was a little' bit shy of his man'it did not take him long to wake up to the "fact that he had the winning asset — speed. > x Before the business had. settled down he was cramming on the pace with his left hand, and, at times he had v that member up and under before Jansen was awake to where it came from. All he seemed to be able to make - out was that he was being hit, and hit often,, while m return he was failing to even up the blows. Purdy was relying on straight punching to score him his points, though at times he would let go a left hook to the face, ' or /a rip to the body: - In the aggregate, however, it was a

straight left which, shot like a rattler's fangs that found Mons. Jansen's map. bf France. On the other hand Jansen was swinging his punches, and he' got on as well as the average man, who swings blows at Purdy. V II f < Telegraphe'q 'Em '. i ——————— Starting his punches well backsometimes they started near the floor — they were always seen coming. ■A 'swing of the body and an uplifted glove found them coming ,home on to ,IIIIIIIIIII<IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMIIIII|IIIIIIIIIIIII'VMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

an elbow or a glove, but more often than not a back move saw them whizz by— just so near, and yet so far. Throughout the evening Jahsen never altered or amended his plan of action and, as. he was being read like a book,, Purely was having the I time of his life. T The' business was all 'over before Jahsen got a\ winning margin. This was m the thirteenth when he had just a fraction the better of it,. but that wks the only round he won. Three of them were very even— the first, the fourth and the ninth— and m the eleven remaining Purdy had the call.
